Cool Your Room for Better Sleep
Why a cooler bedroom helps you fall and stay asleep, and cheap ways to get there before you spend on gear.
Your core body temperature drops as you fall asleep. A room that’s too warm works against that, and research links heat exposure with more wakefulness and less deep and REM sleep (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012).
The Sleep Foundation suggests a bedroom of roughly 65°F (about 18°C), give or take a few degrees (Sleep Foundation).
Try these first (free or cheap)
- Set the thermostat a few degrees lower at bedtime.
- Use breathable bedding: lightweight comforters like the Buffy Breeze or Slumber Cloud.
- A warm shower 1–2 hours before bed can help you fall asleep faster (Haghayegh et al., 2019).
When gear makes sense
If you share a bed with someone who runs at a different temperature, an active system lets each side differ. See Eight Sleep vs Chilipad.
